VICE-PRESIDENT Nan Ni Ni Aye, who is also Chair of the National Tourism Development Central Committee, presided over the committee’s first coor­dination meeting in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.

 

Speaking at the meet­ing, the Vice-President said Myanmar’s strategic geographical location, rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, historical and ar­chaeological sites, beach­es and coastal areas, and the diverse traditions and customs of ethnic people constitute valuable tour­ism assets that attract international visitors. Therefore, the regional and state governments, together with tourism-re­lated organizations, should formulate and implement practical tourism develop­ment plans based on the unique tourism resources of the respective areas.

 

The Destination Man­agement Organization (DMO) plays a key role in the sustainable devel­opment of tourist desti­nations. She called for stronger DMO structures and effective destination management measures. She also stressed the need to improve air connectivi­ty by expanding domestic flight routes to key tour­ist destinations and up­grading airport facilities through public-private partnerships.

 

She highlighted the importance of facilitating travel for international visitors by easing visa procedures where appropriate, enhancing travel safety and security, improving insurance services, and making payment systems more convenient. She said these improvements should be undertak­en in accordance with existing laws, regulations and guidelines through coordination.

 

The Vice-President urged region and state governments to develop the tourism industry, cultural heritage sites, festivals and priority desti­nations, while improving infrastructure, marketing and service standards. She also called on private tourism operators to strengthen efforts to make Myanmar a competitive regional destination and encouraged all stakeholders to work together to accelerate the recovery of the country’s tourism industry.

 

Committee Vice-Chair Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Soe Win and Committee Secretary Deputy Minister for Hotels, Tourism and Culture U Phyo Zaw Soe reported on the current situation of the tourism industry, development measures, completed and ongoing work plans.
