AN EARTHQUAKE measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale jolted people living in and around Yangon last night. The quake was felt by people residing in Yangon, according to the Meteorology and Hydrology Deparment.
The epicentre of the earthquake was about 30 miles north-west of Yangon’s KabaAye seismological observatory. The quake shook Yangon at 9:54 pm last night.
The earthquake forced people living in high-rise buildings in Yangon to flee their homes.
Early yesterday morning, another earthquake of magnitude 3.9 on the Richter scale was recorded at 4:21 am about 39 miles north-northwest of the Myitkyina seismological observatory. The epicenter of the quake was inside Myanmar, about 38 miles north-north-west of Myitkyina, latitude 25.94°N, longitude 97.26°E, and depth 10 kilometers. No casualties were reported in either quake.
Myanmar lies on the Sagaing, Kyaukgyan, Kabaw and Kalatan faults and earthquake is one of the natural disasters in the country.
A magnitude 6 earth-quake hit the eastern part of Shan State in 2011 and killed 76 people.— GNLM
