OVER 5,270 tons of rice, worth more than US$1 million, was exported to the neighbouring country of China through the border gates between 13 and 19 July, according to news released online by the Ministry of Commerce.
Myanmar’s rice exports to China were higher in the week ended 19 July compared to the previous week, with exports exceeding 4,860 tons at the Muse gate, crossing 360 tons at the Chinshwehaw gate, and reaching over 40 tons at the Lwejel gate.
During the period, 20,000 tons of rice, with an estimated value of over $6 million, was shipped through the sea route. Through the maritime trade, over 8,600 tons of rice was shipped to the Philippines market, while nearly 5,000 tons was exported to China, over 3,000 tons was placed on the European market, and 2,000 tons was sent to African countries.
There was a slight decrease in rice exports via the sea route as the volume of rice exported to African countries dipped. In addition, exports of broken rice also registered a drop against the previous week, with over 9,500 tons of broken rice worth $2 million shipped to the EU, Indonesia, Côte d’Ivoire, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore.
The prices of rice in the export market have continued to fall, according to the Myanmar Rice Federation.
Between 1 October and 19 July in the current fiscal year, 1.89 million metric tons of rice and broken rice, with an estimated value of $573 million, was shipped to foreign countries.—GNLM
