EARTHQUAKE-DAMAGED pagodas and cave temples in the ancient city of Sri Ksetra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Pyay Township, Bago Region, are being systematically restored, according to the Department of Archaeology and National Museum (Sri Ksetra).
The Bawbawgyi Stupa and Laymyathna Cave Temple sustained the most damage. Restoration of the Bawbawgyi Stupa has been completed; work is underway at the Phayahaung Cave Temple, and Phayagyi and Phayamah pagodas will be restored next.
The three ancient Pyu cities of Hanlin, Beikthano and Sri Ksetra were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014. Sri Ksetra, an oval-shaped ancient city enclosed by a nine-mile wall, still retains many of its original features, including its moat, palace, religious buildings and pagodas. — ASH/MKKS
