MYANMAR mostly exported garments and petroleum products, which are primarily imported in the five years from the 2021-2022 financial year to 2025-2026 FY, according to the Department of Trade under the Ministry of Commerce.

Out of 20 export items in the past five years, garments ranked first with 26 per cent in the 2021-2022 FY, 32 per cent in the 2022-2023 FY, 28 per cent in the 2023-2024 FY, 25.44 per cent in the 2024-2025 FY and 28.29 per cent in the 2025-2026 FY (until February). Myanmar’s garment products are exported to 85 countries, including Japan, Germany and Poland.

The second largest export during the five years was natural gas, mostly exported to China and Thailand, with 21 per cent in the 2021-2022 FY, 24 per cent in the 2022-2023 FY, 23 per cent in the 2023-2024 FY, 21.87 per cent in the 2024-2025 FY, and 28.29 per cent in the 2025-2026 FY until February.

Petroleum products were placed first among the top 20 import items, with 28 per cent in the 2021-2022 FY, 31 per cent in the 2022-2023 FY, 32 per cent in the 2023-2024 FY, 35.42 per cent in the 2024-2025 FY and 25.29 per cent in the 2025-2026 FY until February.

These petroleum products were imported from 27 countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Furthermore, other import items are yarn and fabrics (CMP raw materials), iron and steel (construction and industrial use), machinery and mechanical appliances, palm oil, fertilizers, plastic raw materials, electrical distribution and installation equipment, motor vehicles and vehicle parts, chemical products, pharmaceuticals, lace and knitted fabrics (CMP raw materials), dry batteries, various types of paper, wheat grains, wheat flour, non-metallic minerals, construction materials, ships and ship parts, oil drilling equipment and related supplies, railway and railway equipment, metal finishing products, and motorcycles and spare parts. — ASH/KK
