Myanmar lima bean price surges one time this year

Myanmar lima beans are destined for the Mandalay market this 2022 pulses season and the opening price has mounted one time this year compared to last year, according to the Mandalay pulses traders.
The lima bean is primarily entered from Madaya and Singu townships. Same period last year, the lima bean was priced at 80,000 per bag (containing three baskets). But this year, a bag of lima bean is sold for K180,000 for big size, K160,000 for median size and K110,000 for small size, lifted the price one time than last year opening price, said U Soe Win Myint, an owner of the Soe Win Myint Brokerage from Mandalay.

“The price of lima bean has reached a record high in the early harvest season. The demand for consumption is also high. The Chinese traders are also purchasing the lima bean when the border checkpoint is started resuming. In the 2022 pulses season, the lima bean price has raised a record high over the past five years. The lima bean is yearly exported to China, India, Japan and European countries. The lima beans are also growing in special fields. It can be grown as a winter crop only once a year and started harvesting in January. It is entering the market abundantly in February and March. The demand for lima bean has also been increasing year by year due to market demand,” he added.

The lima beans are grown chiefly in central Myanmar as well as Minbu, Sinbyukyun and Salin areas of Magway region, Mahlaing, Taungtha and Natogyi areas of Mandalay region and Gangaw, Kalay, Kalewa, Shwebo and Kabaw valley areas of Sagaing region, it is learnt. — Min Htet Aung (Mandalay Sub-Printing House)/GNLM
