More than 10,000 acres of garlic have been cultivated in the Sagaing Region so far. The garlic is grown mostly in the Shwebo district.
According to the official statistics of Sagaing Region Agriculture Department, the Sagaing Region grew 11,370 acres of garlic, including 487 acres in Mawlaik district, 40 acres in Tamu district, 1,263 acres in Kalay district, 84 acres in Hkamti district, 192 acres in Naga area, 347 acres in Monywa district, 1,253 acres in Yinmabin district, 6,956 acres in Shwebo district, 81 acres in Sagaing district, 535 acres in Katha district and 132 acres in Kawlin district.
“The garlic cultivation in the Sagaing region is not as high as that of onion. There are fewer acres of garlic cultivation. People from the Sagaing region are growing the garlic on a manageable scale for their house use. The cultivation of the garlic plant is a bit costly,” said U Aung Kyi Win, the deputy head of the Sagaing Region Agriculture Department.
Winter crops season of the 2021-22 financial year, Sagaing region started cultivating the garlic in October 2021. So far, about 11,370 acres of garlic have been completely cultivated. Each acre of garlic cultivation will cost K1.5 million and it can be harvested about 1,500 or 2,000 visses.
Sagaing Region Agriculture Department is making effort to get a better price, to be able to grow under GAP method and to make good quality garlic and, providing technology to make garlic a bit last longer, it is learnt. — Lu Lay/GNLM
