Warning of torrential rain in Kyushu

Heavy rains continue to hit Japan's southwestern island of Kyushu and other areas. Meteorological Agency officials are warning of rain-triggered mudslides.

Hioki City in Kagoshima Prefecture had 320 millimeters of rain within a 24-hour period until Monday afternoon. That is more than the average amount for the whole month of July.

Heavy rain accompanied by lightning is expected on Tuesday in parts of Kyushu due to an active rain front.

Weather officials warn the front will linger over Kyushu and other regions of western Japan through Thursday.
