US-Russia meeting 'may be organized on eve of G20'

17 June

A Russian presidential office spokesperson says a meeting of the US and Russian leaders could be prepared on the eve of the G20 summit in Osaka.

Dmitry Peskov commented on Sunday about the possibility of a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He noted that Russia had not received any initiatives from the US on this matter.

He said a full-fledged meeting of the two leaders could be organized even on the eve of the G20 summit that will be held on June 28 and 29.

Last year, Trump canceled his planned meeting with Putin at the G20 summit in Argentina just before the agreed date. The US government cited Russia's seizure of Ukrainian navy ships as a reason.

Observers say Peskov's remarks indicate that Russia hopes to improve bilateral relations, as the US special counsel has completed his probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.
