Trade industry expected to grow up with implementation of NES

The implementation of National Export Strategy (NES) 2020-2025 will uplift the trade industry of Myanmar, according to the press conference on the strategy at the Sedona Hotel in Yangon on 31 January.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister for Commerce U Aung Htoo said the National Export Strategy 2020-2025 will be implemented after its design is drawn. The implementation of the strategy will cover not only the products of currently exporting but also the new export products which will be manufactured in future.

The first five-year National Export Strategy was implemented from 2015 to 2019, and gained certain achievements. Therefore, the new five-year strategy was drawn based on the experiences of last five years and discussing with the related stakeholders, the Deputy Minister added.

“The NES 2020-2025 provides a key opportunity for the Government and private sector to work together in creating jobs and new opportunities for the people of Myanmar. The world economy is changing fast and we need to be more strategic. The global pivot to Asia offers new opportunities and challenges for Myanmar. NES implementation will provide concrete solutions for Myanmar to participate in global value chains,” said U Aung Soe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce.

The Permanent Secretary continued that the extension of the strategy will also focus the newly expanded sectors, together with current operating sectors of industry, electrical components, textile and garment, forest, food processing based on farming products, fisheries, digital products and services.

The new sectors include management sector, trade information services, and creativity and entrepreneurship sectors.
The sectors included at the previous five-year strategy – rice, pulses, rubber, tourism and financial services – are also being and will be implemented, he added.

The Ministry of Commerce will also boost the sectors of fruits and vegetables, gems and jewellery, and handicrafts.

The International Trade Centre (ITC) is cooperating on the promotion of exporting avocado, pineapple, grapefruit and garlic, with the assistance from the European Union (EU), and will also assist in the sectors of pulses, fruits and vegetables and quality management.

Vice President of UMFCCI U Maung Maung Lay also delivered a speech, followed by Daw Yin Yin Moe of Hla Yin Moe Company, an export company, explaining the advantages of the national export strategy.

Ministry of Commerce designed the National Export Strategy (NES) 2020-2025 in cooperation with UMFCCI and with the technical assistances from the ICT. The meetings on the related sectors of the NES will be held.
