MYANMAR badminton icon Thet Htar Thuzar will compete in the 2019 Syed Modi International Badminton Championships, which will take place from 26 November to 1 December at the Babu Banarasi Das Indoor Stadi-um in Lucknow, India, according to her official social media page.
Organized under the supervision of the Badminton Association of India, the competition is a Grade-2 level Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) Badminton World Federation World Tour Super 300 tournament, according to the World Badminton Federation.
The prize money for the tour-ney has been set at US$150,000.
The world’s best badminton players will be competing in the women’s singles event of the tourney: He Bing Jiao from Chi-na (world ranking 7), Michelle Li from Canada (world ranking 8), Saina Nehwal from India (world ranking 9), An Se Young from South Korea (world ranking 10), and Carolina Marin from Spain (world ranking 19).
In Round 1, Thet Htar Thuzar will face South Korean badminton player Sim Yu, who is 52nd in the world rankings.
If Thet Htar Thuzar passes Round 1, she will face Carolina Marin, who was ranked No. 1 and was the champion of the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, according to Thet Htar Thuzar’s social page.
Currently, Thet Htar Thuzar has reached 68 in world rankings, and has a good potential to ad-vance in the upcoming 2020 Sum-mer Olympics in Tokyo.—Lynn Thit (Tgi)
