Schools in Hong Kong to be closed on Thursday

Schools in Hong Kong will be closed on Thursday due to ongoing clashes between the police and protesters.


Anti-government protesters, responding to calls on social media to block traffic networks, have been disrupting bus and subway services in the city since Monday.


Hong Kong's government decided to close all schools from kindergarten to high school on Thursday to ensure the safety of the students.


Some universities, including the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where violent clashes occurred on Tuesday, decided to cancel all classes for the current term though the winter holidays, which are more than two weeks away.


Students from mainland China at the Chinese University of Hong Kong fled to safety on Wednesday on a boat provided by the police.


Local media reported that students from Taiwan are also starting to leave Hong Kong.


Violence continued Wednesday evening on the Kowloon Peninsula and in suburban residential areas, with young people in black outfits throwing objects on pedestrian overpasses and setting up roadblocks.


There were more calls for traffic disruptions on Thursday.
