Over 120 monkeypox cases reported in Europe

May 24

The number of monkeypox cases in Europe has topped 120, and health officials in the region are on high alert.

British health authorities reported 37 more cases on Monday. That brought the total to 57.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said 67 cases had been confirmed in European Union countries, as of Monday.

It said the cases were reported in nine countries, including Spain, Portugal, Germany and Sweden. The ECDC also said most of the cases are mild.

The symptoms of the viral disease include fevers, rashes, headaches and sore throats.

British health officials are advising at-risk people to isolate at home for up to 21 days. Individuals living with infected patients are among those considered to be at risk.

European officials also say people who have been in close contact with infected individuals should self-monitor for the development of symptoms for 21 days after their last exposure.
