MYANMAR-THAILAND border trade has increased by US$350 million and stands at $1.1 billion between 1 October and 24 December this mini-budget period, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
Last year, the bilateral border trade hit $761 million. The country’s export to neighbouring Thailand reached $713.64 million while its import shared $398.54 million.
Myanmar is carrying out border trade with the neighbouring country Thailand through seven border posts – Tachilek, Myawady, Myeik, Mawtawng, Hteekhee, Kawthoung and Meisei border areas respectively. Myawady border trade accounted for the largest volume of trade with Thailand, followed by Hteekhee, according to the statistical report of the Myanmar Ministry of Commerce.
Myanmar’s exports to Thailand were primarily agriculture and livestock products, and imports from Thailand were mainly non-alcoholic beverages, fabric and yarn, motorcycles and related parts, and construction materials.
Between 2016-2017 FY and the mini-budget period of the 2021-2022FY (as of December), Thailand has been Myanmar’s largest trade partner among the ASEAN states, followed by Singapore and Malaysia.
The bilateral trade between Myanmar and Thailand stood at $3.26 billion in FY2020-2021 (as of July), $5.1 billion in FY2019-2020, $5.5 billion in FY2018-2019, $2.9 billion in the mini-budget year of 2018 or transitional period from April to September this year, $5 billion in FY2017-2018, $4.3 billion in the 2016-2017FY, $4.8 billion in the 2015-2016FY, $5.7 billion in the 2014-2015FY, $5.6 billion in the 2013-2014FY, $4.7 billion in the 2012-2013FY, and $4.5 billion in the 2011-2012FY, according to the Myanmar Ministry of Commerce. — ACM/GNLM
