THE Myanmar delegation, led by Chairperson Daw Sanda Khin of the Myanmar Cultural Heritage Preservation Group, returned to Yangon by air yesterday morning. Their mission was to secure recognition of Traditional Myanmar New Year Water Festival, Thingyan, in UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list.
Upon their arrival, the delegation was warmly welcomed by Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein and his spouse, regional ministers and their spouses, members of women’s organizations, the Maternal and Child Welfare Association, officials from the Department of Archaeology and National Museum, artistes, ethnic representatives, students, cultural dance troupes, mothers’ groups, and traditional artisans, including those from film, theatre, music, painting, and sculpture.
During the reception, artistes performed Thingyan songs, while attendees, including cultural dance troupes, participated joyfully in honour of the delegation’s achievements. — MNA/KZL
