THE Myanmar delegation, led by Chairperson Daw Sanda Khin of the Myanmar Cultural Heritage Preservation Group, returned to Yangon by air yes­terday morning. Their mis­sion was to secure recognition of Traditional Myanmar New Year Water Festival, Thing­yan, in UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list.

 

Upon their arrival, the delegation was warmly wel­comed by Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein and his spouse, regional ministers and their spouses, members of women’s organ­izations, the Maternal and Child Welfare Association, officials from the Department of Archaeology and Nation­al Museum, artistes, ethnic representatives, students, cultural dance troupes, moth­ers’ groups, and traditional artisans, including those from film, theatre, music, painting, and sculpture.

 

During the reception, artistes performed Thing­yan songs, while attendees, including cultural dance troupes, participated joyfully in honour of the delegation’s achievements. — MNA/KZL
