Myanmar, Chinese businessmen expect to reopen damaged bridge

Kanpaiktee, 7 July

A Chinese construction company and the Department of Road under the Ministry of Construction were tasked with repairing a damaged bridge on the Waingmaw-Sadon-Kanpaiktee Road in Waingmaw Township, Kachin State.

The bridge No. 6/56 was damaged by the torrential rains. Repair works for the damaged bridge began on 4 July and the bridge is expected to be open traffic in the second week of this month, according to the bridge construction group. A 30 ft. long and 13 ft. wide steel bridge will be replaced. A total of 50 workers including Chinese and Myanmar experts are engaged in the repair work of the bridge round the clock, said an in-charge from the Chinese construction company.

The road section is vital for bilateral trade between Myanmar and China. The road block has led to the stagnant export and import between the two countries. Businessmen from both countries are expecting to resume bilateral trade along with reopening of the road section as soon as possible.—Win Naing
