Mudon farmers cultivate long beans on manageable scale, earn better incomes

January 26,2022

THE local farmers from the villages around Mudon township are growing long beans on a manageable scale and earning a better income.

Regarding the growing of string beans, the long bean is a crop that does not require a lot of manpower. But the growers need to take care of the long bean daily because it is a favourite plant of leaf beetles and pods. If it is necessary, the growers should spray the pesticide. The long bean cultivation also requires irrigation water.

“After cultivating for one and half months, the marketable long bean crops could be harvested. The domestic market prevailing price of long bean is K 2,500 per viss. In the market, the long beans are sold for K600 per bundle. Now, the growers are earning extra income for their family by growing the long bean,” said a long bean grower from Phae Doe village.

Mudon township mainly grows rubber plantations and agriculture. It is also learnt that people from Mudon township are growing other crops and vegetables to make money to support their families.

The long bean is a necessary crop not only for the housewives but for the Myanmar rice noodle soup (locally called Monhinga) sellers. So, the local growers are happy, making a profit by selling the long beans. — Aung Myo Thu (IPRD)/GNLM
