MoHS producing skilled nurses through degree, diploma courses, on- and off-campus programs

Lecture hall, hostel and dining hall of Nursing Related Field Practice Training School at Dagon Myothit (East), Yangon were opened yesterday morning.

Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister for Health and Sports Dr. Myint Htwe said the ministry, with the cooperation of WHO experts, is upgrading the curriculum of nursing schools to meet the international standard. Beginning 2018-2019 nurses training schools have been admitting 3600 trainees a year, up from only 1800 in the past. Principals of midwifery schools should hold talks, knowledge sharing sessions, regular meetings with specialist doctors of training hospitals. Libraries of nurses training schools and midwifery schools should be provided with more books including textbooks. Suggestions and work programs produced by conferences in 2016 and 2017 should be reviewed to make a priority list.

He said the Ministry is producing skilled nurses through nursing science degree courses, on-campus program, off-campus program and nursing diploma courses. Nurses attending the course at the school should try to become candidates of master’s degree and doctorate degree courses
Speaker of Yangon Region Hluttaw U Tin Maung Tun and principal of the school Daw Mi Khin Zaw Mu also gave speeches.

The Union Minister, the Speaker and officials formally opened the facilities.

Afterwards, Union Minister for Health and Sports Dr. Myint Htwe attended the ceremony to mark the 20th anniversary of the cooperation between his ministry and Niigata University of Japan at Novotel Hotel in Yangon.

In his address, the Union Minister said sharing of knowledge and technology with the university has enhanced the efficiency of the ministry staff. Scholars who have completed their studies at the university should share and effectively apply their knowledge in the practical field. He urged the Niigata University to extend its cooperation with the departments and universities under the ministry in multiple sectors including research and development through signing of more MoUs.

Deputy Chief of Mission of Japanese Embassy Mr. Toru Maeda and President of Niigata University Professor Sugata Takahashi extended greetings.

The ministry and the university have reached agreements to monitor seasonal flu and conduct vaccination programs, research and diseases prevention and treatment.

Accompanied by officials, the Union Minister also attended the opening of the first Mother’s Milk Bank in Myanmar at the Central Women’s Hospital in Yangon, and gave a speech.

Medical superintendent of the hospital Dr. Khin Pyone Kyi, Ms. Jennifer Cashin, Regional Technical Specialist of Alive and Thrive, and Pediatrician Professor (Retired) Dr. San San Myint, fundraiser Dr. Htet Zan Lin and Pediatrician Professor Dr. Nant San San Aye also gave speeches. — MNA (Translated by TMT)
