Macron arriving in Japan for G20 summit

French President Emmanuel Macron will arrive in Japan on Wednesday to meet Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and attend the Group of 20 summit.This will be his first visit to Japan as president.

He is scheduled to meet Abe on Wednesday. The two leaders are set to announce a roadmap for bilateral cooperation in energy, transport and other fields.

They are also expected to confirm their cooperation for the success of the G20 meeting and the G7 summit that France will chair in August. France plans to stress the importance of multinational frameworks to counter the spread of protectionism.

The French presidential office says Macron also hopes to discuss ways to strengthen the Nissan-Renault alliance when he meets Abe. The French government is Renault's biggest shareholder.

On Thursday, Emperor Naruhito will host a luncheon for Macron at the Imperial Palace. Macron will be the second foreign leader to meet the Emperor, who ascended to the throne in May.

At the G20 summit, which will open on Friday in Osaka, Macron is expected to call for international cooperation on trade and climate change. He is also expected to urge other leaders to work together to make rules for digital markets.Macron and his wife, Brigitte, will stay in Japan till Saturday.
