The prices of dried chilli pepper are headed to fall in the last week of November owing to low demand in Yangon markets, said Ko Hla Han, an owner of chilli pepper depot on Seinpan Street, told the Global New Light of Myanmar (GNLM).
On 22 November 2022, small numbers of bell peppers from the Sinphyukyun area entered the Bayintnaung Wholesale Market. The wholesale price was K28,000 per viss, according to bell pepper entrepreneurs from the Bayintnaung Wholesale Market.
Among bell peppers, those from the Sinphyukyun area which are processed in cold storage and ones from delta regions are priced at K31,000 per viss. Other bell peppers are worth K18,000-22,200 per viss without processing at cold storage. The prices of long chilli peppers stood at around K17,000-22,000 per viss depending on varieties and Moehtaung chilli pepper fetched K15,000-16,000, the chilli pepper depots stated.
The new long chilli peppers (Panye and Hmyarni) are likely to arrive in the Yangon market in the upcoming months. Those buyers who send the chilli peppers to regions other than Yangon are observing the markets and speculating about the possible price decrease rather than processing one at cold storage facilities. Three types of chilli peppers are seen in Shan State.
The long chilli peppers produced by Shan State dipped to K17,000 from K17,500 per viss. Yet, the demand is pretty low. Similarly, the prices of Moehtaung chilli peppers from Shan State dropped from K16,500-16,000 per viss. Those Moehtaung chilli peppers from various regions are priced at only K15,000 per viss. The newly harvested Moehtaung chilli peppers from the Pyawbwe area decreased from K16,200 to K15,000 per viss. The new bell peppers are valued at over K20,000-22,000 per viss.
The bell peppers from China are expected to enter the Yangon market. The prices of chilli peppers have moved onwards since mid-2022. The bell peppers are priced at the highest while the prices of monsoon chilli peppers are the lowest. Those chilli peppers processed at cold storage receive a higher price due to their colour. The traders who keep the dried chilli pepper and onions in their hands are prospering on account of the record high prices, as per the market reports. – TWA/GNLM
