Local sesame farmers from Myinmu Township, Sagaing Region, are pleased during the sesame harvest because of rising demand from the market.
Local farmers grow sesame because there are only a few costs involved in sesame cultivation. The cultivation costs nearly K50,000 per acre for use of a tractor, K 16,000 for sesame seeds and K70,000 for other expenses. The sesame is also easy to grow. Sesame is grown mostly in September and harvested in November.
“This year, we receive good profits,” said U Soe Thein, a local sesame grower from Kone Ywar village, Myinmu Township.
The white sesame yield is 10 baskets per acre, while the black sesame yield is eight baskets per acre.
The price of white sesame is K 48,500 per basket, while the price of black sesame is K 78,000 per basket at the Myinmu town wholesale market, according to Tun sesame depot.—Aung Soe Phay (Myinmu) (Translated by Hay Mar)
