At least 100 dead after M7.4 quake hits Turkey

A powerful earthquake struck south-east Turkey on Monday morning, reportedly leaving at least 100 people dead in the country and neighboring Syria.

Turkish disaster management officials say the quake with an estimated magnitude of 7.4 hit the south-eastern Turkish province of Kahramanmaras, near Syria, at 01:17 UTC on Monday.

At least 76 people were reportedly killed and 440 injured.

The governor of Malatya Province says at least 23 people were killed and 140 buildings collapsed. The governor of Sanliurfa Province says at least 17 people died.

Syrian state-run media report that 42 people have been killed in the country.

Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said the country has raised a level four alarm, which includes a call for international aid.

Turkish disaster management officials say more than 40 aftershocks, including a magnitude six-point-six tremor, have been observed.

They are urging people not to enter damaged buildings.
