HK falls short of shutting border with mainland

Hong Kong authorities have shut down more checkpoints with mainland China, but have fallen short of closing all border crossings as demanded by medical workers.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam said on Monday that four more crossings will be closed, including an area near a train station adjacent to Shenzhen, China.

Hong Kong suspended train services directly connected to the mainland on Thursday. Only three locations, including the airport, will now allow people to travel between Hong Kong and mainland China.

A union of doctors and other medical workers at public hospitals have launched a five-day strike to demand full border closure.

The union says about 2,500 members took part on the first day of the strike on Monday. It expects the number of participants to reach 9,000, which is nearly one-third of all members, from Tuesday.

Hong Kong authorities have indicated they will not enforce a full border shutdown.
