The prices of green gram and chickpea are surging in the Yangon market while the prices of black gram and pigeon peas fluctuate.
Green grams and chickpeas also have high domestic consumption. However, the black grams and pigeon peas primarily rely on low-consumption exports.
Myanmar exported 307,567 tonnes of green gram worth US$208.2 million to foreign trade partners between 30 December 2023 and 5 January 2024. Meanwhile, that week, 591,538 tonnes of black gram worth $541.004 million and 122,394 tonnes of pigeon pea worth $110.875 million were also shipped to external markets. Green gram ranked second in pulse exports that week, according to the pulse export statistics of the institution concerned.
The prices of pulses stood at K2.99 million per tonne of black gram (Fair Average Quality) and K3.43 million per tonne of pigeon pea on 15 January 2024, which declined from K3.035 million per tonne of black gram and K3.485 million per tonne of pigeon pea on 13 January.
The prices of green gram and chickpea remained unchanged at K2,750-K3,085 per viss of green gram and K6,500-K6,800 per viss of chickpea on 13-15 January 2024.
The prices were registered at K2,080-K2,170 per viss of green gram from Pakokku, K2,800-2,920 per viss of green gram (Shwewah), K4,250-K4,440 per viss of gram, K1.667 million per tonne of black gram and K1.83 million per tonne of pigeon pea on 14 January 2023.
The figures reflected an increase of K1.4 million per tonne of chickpea, K500,000 per tonne of green gram (Pakokku), K1.3 million per tonne of black gram and K1.6 million per tonne of pigeon pea within one year. — TWA/KK
