Heavy arrivals in the market have led to a steep decrease in the price of ginger, according to the local traders.
Although one viss (a viss equals 1.6 kg) of ginger was sold for over K1,000 in the market in August, the ginger price plummeted to K850 per viss on 16 September. The downward trend began during the first week of September.
Besides, the price of potatoes, one of the essential cooking items in households, are keep rising in the market, it is learnt.
The potato was priced at only K1,200 per viss in the market in August, whereas it dramatically rose to K1,300 per viss on 16 September.
The price of garlic (Htoo Nga), one of the kitchen utensils, stood at K2,900 per viss in the end-August, but it went up to K3,200 per viss on 16 September. The remaining garlic species such as Htoo Lay and Kyukok fell in the market.
The price of garlic (Htoo Lay variety) was approximately K2,600 per viss at the end of August, whereas now it is only K2,500 per viss on 16 September.
The price of garlic (Kyukok) dropped from approximately K4800 per viss to K4,600 per viss on 16 September.
Further, the onion prices remained stable in the market and the price move in the range of K470-K500 per viss depending on varieties and sizes on 16 September.
Therefore, the traders said that it is difficult to predict the price of basic foodstuffs price due to the depreciation of Myanmar Kyat and the current political situation, it is leant. — NN/GNLM
