Paungde, 23 January

A total of 1,598 acres of winter sunflowers have been successfully cultivated in Paungde Township, Bago Region, this cold season, according to the Departments of Survey and Agriculture.

To support farmers, the Township Agriculture Supervision Committee provided high-quality seeds and guidance on proper planting techniques to help increase yields. Efforts are also underway to address other agricultural challenges. The Agriculture Supervision Committee, in collaboration with farmers, is aiming to achieve a target yield of 50 baskets per acre, with nearly 100% success in sunflower planting so far.

In addition to sunflowers, Paungde Township has planted 10,396 acres of sesame, including the 1,598 acres of sunflowers and 7,200 acres of peanuts this winter. If the yield of oilseed crops continues to improve, it will help ensure local edible oil security and reduce the need to import oil from abroad. Furthermore, by selling oilseed crops, farmers will be able to boost their income and improve their socio-economic conditions.

The Chairman of the Township Administration Body has urged farmers and members of village tract agricultural supervision committee to collaborate and expand oilseed crop cultivation every year.—Shwetha (IPRD)
