COLOURFUL lanterns and bamboo two-wheel push run toys with handles and lanterns on wheels made from Kyimyindine, Yangon Region, are sent to Ayeyawady and Bago regions and Mon State, said U Khin Maung Kyi, a lantern maker who is a lantern business owner.

“Our ward is famous for its handicraft art as residents make sacred bronze statues, marble Buddha statues, and umbrellas, among others. We received a purchase order in June. As it is a family-owned business that has been running for over 50 years, all the family members make them. We supply about 70 per cent of lanterns for a region,” he said.

The prices vary depending on design and size, ranging from K3,000 to K30,000. Those lanterns are made from bamboo and coloured wax paper. We produced about 15 innovative lantern designs. There are lanterns in the shapes of animals, vehicles, ships, aeroplanes and cartoon characters to attract the attention of the children. — ASH/KK
