China withdraws as host of Olympic qualifiers

27 January

A women's Olympic qualifying soccer tournament scheduled for next month in Nanjing, China, will be moved to Sydney, Australia, over concerns about the outbreak of the new coronavirus.

The Asian Football Confederation, or AFC, made the announcement on Sunday.

Tokyo 2020 Asian qualifiers final round for Group B involving Australia, Taiwan, Thailand and China was originally scheduled to be held in Wuhan from February 3 to 9.

Last Wednesday, the AFC said the venue would be moved to Nanjing due to the spread of pneumonia linked to the new coronavirus.

As the death toll and number of infections continued to rise, the AFC said the Chinese Football Association made the decision to withdraw as host of the Asian qualifiers final round.
