Britain set to hold December 12 election

30 October

Britain is set to hold a general election on December 12 after lawmakers backed a bill calling for the vote. This follows months of deadlock over Brexit, which has been delayed until January 31.

The bill submitted by Prime Minister Boris Johnson was approved in the House of Commons on Tuesday by a vote of 438 to 20.

Opposition parties decided to support the election proposal after the European Union agreed to extend the Brexit deadline, reducing the risk of a no-deal Brexit.

Johnson's Conservative Party hopes to rally public support to win a majority in the election, so the country can leave the EU as soon as possible.

But opposition parties aim to replace Johnson's administration and block Brexit under the terms he agreed with the EU.

The election is likely to rekindle public debate on whether the country should leave the EU or not.
