Australian police arrest 3 for alleged terror plot

Australian police have arrested three men over an alleged terror plot to attack various targets in Sydney.

Police and intelligence authorities on Tuesday searched six locations, including the suspects' homes in the suburbs of Sydney. They arrested three men aged 20, 23 and 30. Police believe the younger two belong to the Islamic State militant group.

Investigators believe the 20-year-old man was plotting to attack police stations, embassies and other locations, with the cooperation of the two others. The youngest man reportedly has lived in Lebanon and was attempting to fight in Afghanistan, together with Islamic State militants there.

Police say the three men met each other through social media and share radical ideas.

A senior police officer says there are still people who may try to commit terror attacks in the country, adding that the safety of the public is a police task of the highest priority.
