AS the Thingyan festival approaches, Ata pots, a traditional Myanmar craft to welcome a new year with flowers, are selling well, according to a local market.

 

In addition to its uses in the whole Thingyan period and on the New Year, Ata pots are used in religious cere­monies, such as for chanting prayers, for auspicious vessels, and for pouring water into Bodhi trees.

 

“Now that Thingyan is approaching, the sale of Ata pots is booming. The closer it gets to Thingyan, the more it sells. The price is good. With flower painting and covering with a curtain, the price is better than last year. Ata pots are used throughout Thingyan. It is used for prayers and other rituals during the New Year. There are two types of Ata pots. The one with a circular bottom frame is used all year round, including its uses in religious ceremo­nies for blessing, praying and pouring water, “ said a local handicrafts trader in Mandalay.

 

Besides Ata pots, natural sand wa­ter pots are also selling well as summer has arrived. — Thit Taw/ZN
