MYANMAR’S Shan United team faced a heavy defeat away from home in the first leg of the 2024-2025 AFC Challenge League East Zone quarterfinals held on 6 March.
In the match, Cambodia’s Svay Rieng FC triumphed over Shan United with a 6-2 victory. Meanwhile, the Chinese Taipei club Tainan City and the Indonesian team Madura United played to a 0-0 draw. With their loss, Shan United’s chances of progressing to the semi finals are now slim.
Shan United entered the match with a full squad of key players, initially trailing 2-1 at halftime. However, the second half saw a series of goals from Svay Rieng, resulting in a heavy defeat. Svay Rieng’s goals came from Cristian, who scored a hat-trick in 17, 31, and 59 minutes. Fijii netted in 54 minutes and Ratanek scored in 75 minutes. Shan United’s only goal came in 65 minutes when defender Zwe Khant Min scored an own goal. For Shan United, Khun Kyaw Zin Hein scored in 39 minutes and Rintaro Tite added another in 88 minutes.
The second leg between Shan United and Svay Rieng will take place on 13 March at the Thuwunna Youth Training Centre in Yangon. – Ko Nyi Lay/KZL
