38 North: Activity at N.Korea launch facility

20 Dec

US research group says it has observed new activity at a North Korean missile test site.

The report comes on the heels of Pyongyang announcing it conducted tests of "great significance" at the facility earlier this month.

38 North released their latest analysis of the Sohae launch facility on Thursday.

It says commercial satellite imagery shows a retractable shelter for an engine test stand has been repositioned.

Photos also indicate troop movement at a nearby security checkpoint.

One of the researchers told NHK that it is unclear whether the North is preparing for another test or doing maintenance work.

The development comes as North Korea's yearend deadline for the US to lift sanctions or make other concessions edges closer.

Earlier this week a US commander suggested North Korea's threat of a "Christmas gift" might be a long-range ballistic missile test.
