2 killed, 5 wounded in U.S. high school shooting

June 7

Two people were killed and five others wounded in a shooting after a high school graduation ceremony on Tuesday afternoon in Richmond, eastern U.S. state Virginia, local police said.

The shooting occurred at around 5:15 p.m. ET (2115 GMT) in Monroe Park after Huguenot High School's graduation ceremony held in the nearby Altria Theater, according to Richmond Public Schools official Matthew Stanley.

Two of the seven people shot died after being taken to the hospital, said Rick Edwards, the city's interim police chief.

Two suspects have been taken into custody, he added. "We think the suspect knew at least one of the victims."

Richmond Public Schools said in a statement that it "will close all schools tomorrow, Wednesday, June 7. All high school graduations this week have also been canceled."

"We're going to do everything we can to bring the individuals who were involved in this to justice. ... This should not be happening anywhere," Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney told a press conference.
