Pwintbyu, 22 January

Pwintbyu Township has successfully completed the cultivation of 16,059 acres of sunflowers in this year’s winter planting season, surpassing its original target, according to the Township Agriculture Department.

The township had initially planned to plant 12,805 acres of sunflowers, with local farmers starting the planting process in the first week of October 2024. As of January 22, a total of 16,059 acres have been planted, exceeding the target.

To support the farmers, the Township Department of Agriculture provided necessary assistance, including sunflower seeds and guidance on proper planting methods to help improve yields. This effort aims to ensure edible oil security for the Township. As a result, local farmers have planted sunflowers on more land than initially designated.

“If sunflowers and other oilseed crops are successfully cultivated in Pwintbyu Township, it will help ensure adequate edible oil supplies for the country, and any surplus can be sold, which will enhance the socio-economic well-being of farmers. Therefore, we must continue efforts to expand planting areas each year,” said Daw Moe Moe Wai, Head of the Township Department of Agriculture.—Hlaing Win Lay (Pwintbyu Myay)
