The Youth Integrity Camp 2/2019 is being conducted in Mandalay, and it is jointly organized by the Anti-Corruption Commission and the Ministry of Education with the technical assistance of UNODC.
Its opening ceremony was held at the Shwepyithar Hotel in Mandalay, and Union Minister for Education Dr Myo Thein Gyi delivered a speech.
The five-day camp is attended by 127 trainee teachers and students from 12 universities and colleges in Mandalay, Meiktila and Monywa.
The Union Minister said the ACC has developed a handbook for teachers at primary and secondary levels to educate students about anti-corruption knowledge and integrity, and the programme will be extended to the upper and higher education levels with the assistance of experts on related subjects.
He also remarked the lack of morals is the root cause of political, economic and social problems, and that teachers play key role for education and ethical development of students.
Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission also explained the reasons of camps for the Youth Integrity, saying to recognize the role of youth participation in implementing anti-corruption strategy and to develop integrity principles for young persons.
He also remarked that integrity is essential for building strong institutions in a country to prevent favoritism of authorities, instead of public interest.
The camp is aimed to lay a foundation for reducing opportunities and behaviours that can lead to corruption in every society in developing the culture of public integrity, to create a society that opposes corruption, and to develop accountable practices in the communities.
U Zarni Aung, the Minister for Electricity, Energy and Construction, appraised the camp which can help to build a corruption-free administration required for a clean government and good governance.
Ms Marie Pagie Cauchoics, the Country Manager of UNODC in Myanmar, explained the importance of integrity, anti-corruption and poverty reduction for the capacity building of the youth, and she concluded the state organizations need to conduct youth development programmes. She also assured the Youth Integrity Camps could help the young people to improve their dignity in respective roles.—MNA
