Yangon market sees price decline of green gram

November 8

THE prices of green gram from Pakokku and green gram (Shwewah) from the Kayan area began to fall in Yangon’s market, along with price drops in black gram and pigeon pea.

The price of green gram from the Pakokku area stayed at K3,080-3,250 per viss between 15 September and 25 October. The prices dipped to K2,580-2,835 per viss on 2 November.

Green gram (Shwewah) prices declined to K3,580 per viss on 6 November after the price remained unchanged at K3,630 per viss between 21 September and 4 November.

The FOB prices stood at US$1,090-1,110 per tonne of black gram (FAQ), $1,190-1,210 per tonne of black gram (SQ), $1,350-1,370 per tonne of pigeon pea, $730-750 per tonne of green gram from central Myanmar region and $930-960 per tonne of green gram (Shwewah) on 4 November.

The FOB prices also slid to $730-750 per tonne of green gram from central Myanmar regions and $910-940 per tonne of green gram (Shwewah) on 6 November.

The price of green gram from the Pakokku area in early November 2023 decreased compared to that recorded in the year-ago period. Yet, the price of green gram (Shwewah) was higher than that of the corresponding period last year.

The main buyer India’s demand for pulses is still strong. New green gram that will flow into the market in one month and black gram that will be harvested in early February and March next year are expected to fetch higher prices. Nonetheless, it is hard to forecast green gram prices. — TWA/KK
