US troops among more than 10 killed in Syria blast

An apparent suicide bombing in northern Syria has killed more than ten people, including four US military personnel. The Islamic State militant group has claimed responsibility.


The attack occurred in the town of Manbij on Wednesday.

 

A video shows a sudden explosion and a ball of fire outside a building where people had gathered. Pedestrians were knocked down by the force of the blast.

 

Officials from the monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights say more than 10 people were killed.

The US Central Command issued a statement confirming that four military personnel, including two soldiers, died and three soldiers were injured.

 

The US Department of Defense says the attack was the deadliest on US troops since they deployed in Syria in 2015.

 

The Islamic State militant group released a statement claiming that a fighter detonated his explosive vest.

 

President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of US troops from Syria on December 19th, saying the Islamic State group has been defeated there.
