The number of new coronavirus cases in the United States has topped 140,000, marking a record daily high.

Figures compiled by Johns Hopkins University show that 144,133 new cases were reported on Wednesday in the country.

The daily tally surpassed the 100,000 mark for the ninth straight day. More than 1,000 deaths have been confirmed each day recently. New infections are on the rise across the US.

In the southern state of Texas, where the cumulative total of cases has topped one million, military medical teams have been dispatched to make up for an acute shortage of doctors and nurses.

Tents are being put up in case hospitals become overloaded with coronavirus patients.

Authorities in New York State are set to re-impose restrictions to stem the spread of the virus. All restaurants, bars and gyms in the state will have to close by 10 p.m. from Friday.

Travel across US state borders is expected to increase later this month and in December because of Thanksgiving and the Christmas holidays. Concerns are growing that the number of cases may increase.
