Union Minister for Commerce attends Illicit Trade Forum in Geneva

Union Minister for Commerce Dr Than Myint attended the Illicit Trade Forum jointly organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development-UNCTAD and the Transnational Alliance to Combat Illicit Trade-TRACIT on 3 and 4 February in Geneva, Switzerland.

High ranking officials from the governments of 50 countries and experts gathered at the forum which was held with the aim of addressing the problem of smuggling, counterfeiting, trafficking of human and wildlife and other forms of illicit trade that hold back progress on the global development agenda.

On 4 February, Union Minister Dr Than Myint, accompanied by Permanent Representative and Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun, met with Ms Dorothy Ng’ ambi Tembo, Executive Director ad interim of the International Trade Centre-ITC and discussed cooperation between Myanmar and the International Trade Centre and trade development in Myanmar.

In the afternoon, the Myanmar delegation met with Deputy Executive Director Ms Ssemuwemba and Mr Simon Hess of the Enhanced Integrated Framework-EIF of the World Trade Organization at the office of the Myanmar Representative in Geneva. At the meeting, the two sides discussed the progress of the Myanmar Services Trade Enhancement Project (M-STEP) and further cooperation.

Afterwards, the Myanmar delegation held a meeting with a delegation from Trade Policy Review Division of the World Trade Organization and discussed plans for holding the Myanmar’s second Trade Policy Review which is slated to be held in October.—MNA
