Tropical Storm Etau develops in South China Sea

Japan's weather officials say Tropical Storm Etau has developed over waters in the South China Sea.

The Meteorological Agency says Etau had a central atmospheric pressure of 998 hectopascals, with maximum winds of around 65 kilometers per hour and gusts of 90 kilometers per hour.

It was packing strong winds of more than 54 kilometers per hour up to 280 kilometers to the northwest and 165 kilometers to the southeast from its center.

The agency says Etau is expected to travel west and is unlikely to affect Japan directly. But it urges vessels navigating in the area to exercise caution.
