PyinOoLwin to be designated as smoke-free city

PyinOoLwin 23 April

The Department of Public Health under the Ministry of Health and Sports is launching an awareness campaign to designate PyinOoLwin as a smoke free city.

A ceremony to clarify the awareness campaign titled “Smoke Free City PyinOoLwin” was held early this year. Medical Superintendent Dr. Than Win of the DPH explained measures to be taken step-by-step by concerned officials and urged them to participate in the drive actively during the ceremony. “We smoke but we don’t want our children smoke. Everybody knows that smoking is harmful to our health. We can take pride for designating as a smoke free city as many tourists visit PyinOoLwin,” he added.

Smoke-free zones will be set up at schools, stadiums, religious buildings, and public spaces to protect people from being affected by smoking-related health problems. Non-smoking areas and smoking areas will be designated at hotels, motels, and guesthouses. In addition, a discussion with township-level officials will be made not to sell cigarettes to persons under the age of 18.—Aung Thu
