Construction works for a disaster-resistant public shelter in Dala Township on government-owned land beside Bogyoke Road, Ant Gyi West Ward, Dala Township, Yangon Region, will be completed in eight months this year.
The project will be managed by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) with financial support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
“The disaster-resistant facility for our township will be financed by the ADB and managed and implemented by the ADPC, and it will cost US$190,000.
The value of the land is not included in that amount, which is only the cost for the building,” said Dala Township Municipal Committee Chairperson Daw Myint Myint Kyi. “To implement this project, the Yangon Regional Government , the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC), the ADB and the ADPC jointly selected an appropriate township out of 33 townships in the area of the YCDC. The Dala Township, which is near the Yangon River and is prone to natural disasters such as fire, floods, and storms was selected by relevant authorities as first priority. North Okkalapa Township was selected as the second priority. There are many working-class people and squatters in Dala Township. And there are just a few disaster-resistant buildings. If our township has disaster-resistant buildings, we will be able to provide safety and rehabilitation services for the people.In addition, the building will be built for multi-purpose uses for the general public.
A reservoir is included in the disaster-resistant public shelter project to prevent water shortage, and solar power supply will be provided in case of power outage.
The construction works are scheduled to begin in February 2021 and it will be completed in eight months, according to Daw Myint Myint Kyi. Originally it was scheduled for completion in August this year. But the COVID-19 crisis has caused delays, so now it is expected to be completed in October.
The ADB, by the JFPR- ADB Grant, has financed to set up a total of six water purification machines in the Dala Township, and to implement an efficient garbage disposal system. It is learnt that similar activities have been implemented in two wards in Hlethaya Township in Yangon.
