The British police initially said the bodies were believed to be Chinese. But many people in Vietnam complained that their family members may have been involved in the incident.

The Vietnamese government cooperated with UK local police to identify the bodies.

The Vietnamese police announced that the 39 people were from the central provinces of Nghean and Hatinh, the northern city of Haiphong, and elsewhere.

Two people, including a man from Northern Ireland who was driving the truck, have been indicted on murder and other charges.

The Vietnamese police also said they arrested 11 people on suspicion of brokering illegal travel abroad.

Police in both countries are investigating the case on suspicion of organized human trafficking.
