Passenger bus catches fire, no casualty reported

No casualties were reported after a passenger bus caught fire on the Yangon-Pathein Road in Kangyidaunt Township, Ayeyawady Region yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred between mileposts 19/2 and 19/3 on the Yangon-Pathein Road near Hnetgyithaik Village at about 2:20 p.m. on 23 April. The Pathein-bound passenger bus with 45 people aboard was driven by a man identified as Kyaw Min Hlaing, 45 years old. The fire is attributed to have started from an overheated battery wire shock of the passenger bus.

Local firefighters led by Township Administrator U Win Myint, the head of the township police force Police Major Lay Myint and the commander of the township fire brigade U Myo Myint Soe rushed to the scene of the fire. They took about 25 minutes to completely put out the blaze with the use of two fire engines, one water tanker and fire extinguishers. The estimated loss of property due to the fire is over Ks. 5 million, according to the Fire Services Department.

Action has been taken against the passenger bus driver over fire negligence and reckless driving by the local police station.—Nan Htike (KGD)
