Pantanaw new long chilli price declines to K3,600 per viss

The wholesale price of long chilli decreased to less than K4,000 per viss on 24 April, although the prices of most commodities in the Yangon market surged.

On 23 April, Pantanaw long chilli from the delta region fetched at K4,000-K4,200 per viss, which dropped to K3,600-K3,700 on 24 April, a trader from the Bayintnaung Seinpan Street chilli wholesale centre told The Global New Light of Myanmar (GNLM).

Traders from the Yangon chilli market forecasted in March that the prices of the long chillies, especially from the delta area, were trending downward as it was a flourishing moment.

In April, chilli prices were turning down as the wholesale price of super long chilli declined to K4,000 per viss on 9 April, and Pantanaw long chilli declined to K3,700 on 24 April. Hinthada’s Hmyani new long chilli arrived in the Yangon market on 22 January with K12,700 per viss for the wholesale price. However, it became K4,000-K4,800 for Hmyani long chilli and K4,500-K4,800 for red long chilli three months later in the market. Other chilli prices are Hinthada Moehtaung K7,500 per viss; Maubin Yele Moehtaung K6,500; delta bell pepper K10,500-K10,800; Sinphyukyun bell pepper K10,800-K11,000; Viet Nam long chilli produced by Bilin Township of Delta area K5,500-K6,000 per viss; and delta long chilli K4,800-K5,000 respectively, according to the market information.

The report states that the current price ranges of long chilli are the lowest within three years, from 2022 to 2024. Long chilli was priced at K10,500-K11,000 on 24 April 2023, K5,000-K5,300 in 2022, K2,400-K2,500 in 2021, and K2,600 in 2020, respectively, according to statistics of previous prices.

In 2022, the long chilli was priced at K5,000 in summer. However, long chillies with cold storage increased to K20,000 per viss in late 2022.
