Navigation system in Yangon River to be upgraded

With the aim of facilitating vessel traffic in the Yangon River, Myanma Port Authority and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will jointly upgrade the navigation system in the Yangon River.


Under the project, the JICA will support upgrading lighthouses and buoys, installing necessary equipment for oceanography, conducting maritime technical training course for officers and staff from Myanma Port Authority, and improving handbooks for navigation system, repair and maintenance.


The project aimed at upgrading navigation system in the Yangon River willl be implemented with ¥‎ 1. 399 billion funded by Japanese Government and it will take about two years.


Yangon Port has an influx of commodity flow and it handles over 90 percent of imports of Myanmar. The survey on upgrade of navigation system was conducted in March and the project will begin soon. In addition, installation of necessary equipment for the upgrade of the system is expected to commence in 2021.
