M6.1 quake hits Laos-Thailand border area

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit a border area between Laos and Thailand early on Thursday. Damage to buildings has been reported.

The US Geological Survey says the quake struck a mountainous region in northwest Laos near the Thai border.

The USGS estimates the tremor had a depth of focus of about 10 kilometers.

A ceiling partially collapsed at an elementary school In the northern Thai province of Nan. Cracks were also found in the walls. The disaster authorities in Thailand say there are no reports of injuries at this stage.

The quake was felt over wide areas of Thailand and Laos.

In the Thai capital of Bangkok, about 600 kilometers from the quake epicenter, a ceiling light swayed for about a minute in a 21-story building.
