Pakkhaung, 7 January
The 81st Anniversary Kayin New Year Day was held collectively by six Kayin villages at Khapaung village, Pakkaung Township in Bago Region yesterday morning.
The ceremony was opened with the hoisting of Kayin national flag at 5 am following the reading of a massage sent by Kayin National Union (KNU). Vice-chairman of Kayin literature and culture committee U Saw Sein Phay clarified about Kayin New Year Day. Next, District Hluttaw representative U Win Naing read a massage sent by Minister of Ethnic Affairs Naing Thet Lwin.
The ceremony was followed by speeches made by Brig-Gen Kyaw Kyaw Naing of Southern Command, Pyithu Hluttaw representative Daw Ni Ni Dune and Township Administrator U Kyaw Htay. Next, Brig-Gen Kyaw Kyaw Naing presented the new year gifts to the attendees.
Included in the ceremony were performances of ethnic dances, Kayin literature, culture and sports. –Than Htun Aung (Pakkaung)
