Japanese Defense Minister Kono to visit China

Japanese Defense Minister Taro Kono is expected to call for more transparency in China's military activities during a two-day visit to the country that begins on Wednesday.

Kono will be the first Japanese defense minister to visit China in 10 years. He will hold talks with his counterpart, Wei Fenghe.

Kono plans to convey the concerns that China has given insufficient explanations to the international community about its growing defense spending and deployment of new fighter jets and an aircraft carrier.

Kono is also scheduled to inspect a Chinese army unit in Beijing. Officials hope Kono's visit to China will promote dialogue and exchanges to build mutual trust.
